“Why a Be Good To Women Day? Don’t women get candy on Valentine’s Day and Sweetest Day? Don’t they get Mother’s Day cards?” These are among the questions I’ve been asked in radio interviews by male listeners. Surprising? Not when you consider the abandon with which women are routinely disrespected and mistreated in all known societies and cultures.

My answer is this. We need to set aside a time to consider the many ramifications of this condition and address ways to change it. We, all people, need to understand that a female has a right to live out her full life potential according to her talents, gifts, visions and dreams and not be denied just because she is not male. I was told this morning about a well known minister who preached that a man needs to have dreams, visions and goals while a woman just needs to have a good man. Need I say more? Do I have to say how ignorant that is?

Women need visions, dreams, goals, desires, love, the right to make mistakes, the right to be wrong, the right to be forgiven, to be imperfect and a good nurturing intimate relationship. She has the right to be HUMAN! Wherever these are lacking for our women our communities suffer accordingly.
